Reducing the Use of Chemical Substances

Creating Safe Products for Customers' Peace of Mind and Environmental Protection

Sharp develops products in the spirit of the 1992 Rio Declaration’s Precautionary Principle. This spirit is part of Sharp’s Code of Conduct. Sharp will ensure proper use and control of chemical substances in its business activities including research, development, and manufacturing, meeting or exceeding levels determined by laws and regulations.
Besides the six substances*1 whose use is restricted under the EU's RoHS directive, Sharp has stopped using certain hazardous substances*2 including beryllium*3 and PFOS*4.
In addition to substances whose harmful effects have been scientifically proven, Sharp gathers data on other hazardous substances that are suspected of having harmful environmental and health effects and, where necessary, bans or sets goals for the reduction of these.

  • Reducing Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and Phthalates

It has been suggested that improper treatment of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and phthalates after disposal can have harmful environmental and health effects.

Although PVC and phthalates are not currently prohibited under any laws covering electrical and electronic products, Sharp makes its utmost efforts to reduce the use of PVC and phthalates according to the Precautionary Principle.
Sharp substituted PVC in the internal wiring and power cords of all AQUOS LCD TVs for the Japanese market made in and after May 2004.

Sharp is committed to eliminating PVC and phthalates from all products by the end of fiscal 2010, provided that it can procure alternatives to these substances that do not sacrifice the capabilities, performance, and quality of its products.

As of August 2008, the following PVC-free* Sharp products are on the market.

Reducing Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs) and Antimony Compounds

It has been suggested that improper treatment of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and antimony compounds after disposal can have harmful environmental and health effects.

Although it is technologically difficult at this point in time to eliminate all BFRs and antimony compounds without sacrificing product safety, Sharp successfully eliminated them from the cabinets of AQUOS that have been on sale in the Japanese market since 2001.

Sharp is committed to eliminating BFRs and antimony compounds from all products by the end of fiscal 2010 according to the Precautionary Principle, provided that it can procure alternatives to these substances that do not sacrifice the capabilities, performance, and quality of its products.

As of August 2008, the following BFR-free* Sharp products are on the market.
